UK Government OZEV and WCS Schemes: Support for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructur

EV Charger Installation - Grant Availability to Businesses, Landlords and Tenants.

The UK government is committed to supporting the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). As part of this effort, the government has launched two schemes to help businesses and individuals install EV charging infrastructure: the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) grant and the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS).

OZEV grant

The OZEV grant provides funding for the installation of EV chargepoints at homes and businesses across the UK. The grant covers up to 75% of the cost of the chargepoint and installation, up to a maximum of £350 for homes and £1,500 for businesses.

To be eligible for the OZEV grant, you must:

  • Own a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) or have ordered one

  • Have a dedicated off-street parking space where the chargepoint will be installed

  • Use a registered and approved installer

Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

The WCS is a voucher-based scheme that provides businesses and other organisations with support towards the upfront costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints. The scheme is available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

To be eligible for the WCS, you must:

  • Be a business, charity or public sector organisation

  • Have a dedicated off-street parking space where the chargepoint will be installed

  • Use a registered and approved installer

Benefits of the OZEV and WCS schemes

The OZEV and WCS schemes offer a number of benefits to businesses and individuals, including:

  • Reduced upfront costs of EV charging infrastructure

  • Increased access to EV charging points

  • Encouragement for employees to switch to EVs

  • Reduced carbon emissions

  • Improved air quality

How to apply for the OZEV and WCS schemes

To apply for the OZEV grant, you must visit the OZEV website and complete an online application form. To apply for the WCS, you must visit the WCS website and complete an online application form.

OZEV Grant - The Installer will process the application on your behalf so you will need to search for an approved Installet in your local area you can use the search tool on the OZEV website here

Once you have received and agreed your quote and any deposit payment the installer will process the grant with you. The grant will then be claimed by the Installer directly from OZEV saving you £350.00. There are certain criteria to be met and your installer can also help you navigate these.

The WCS scheme operates slightly differently as you apply directly for this here, not all installers are qualified/registered to carry out the WCS installations but if they have commercial listed on your search then they are. NOD Electrical Services are registered for both and will be happy to help you during the application process.

There are also further grants available to improve the infrastructure to support the installation, this is generally available for larger more complex installations where multiple chargers need to be installed. Again we can help you plan this.

Conclusion

The UK government's OZEV and WCS schemes offer valuable support for businesses and individuals who are looking to install EV charging infrastructure. The schemes can help to reduce the upfront costs of EV charging infrastructure and make it easier for people to switch to EVs.
