Rogue EICR’s the hidden cost
Why Cheap Electrical Reports Can Cost More in the Long Run
Example of an EICR Report front cover
By NOD Electrical Services – Streatham
After we receiving a few call to quote on remedial works, one in particluar re-enforced what any reputable electrician already knows, there are a lot of dodgy EICR’s being delivered by reputable companies to make money and generate work.
This one classified cables on a circuit as FI which would deem a report to be unsatisfactory the quote to resolve these (the remedial works) suggested a lot of work that the client wqho lives abroad contacted us to discuss their findings as he felt something wasn’t right. After that conversation and checking the report I agreed they had quoted for a large amount of remedial works, some where cheaper than expected. For some bckgrond the property is only 10 years old but apparently in needed a new consumer unit, The quote for the FI was reasonable though maybe too reasonable, unless of course you knew that there wasnt anything wrong.
We carried out some of the rmedail works and cold tell from the report and the remedial works that thing’s weren’t as they seemed, we went back to reteest and cold tell that they hadn’t been tested due to a technique that was sued 10-15 years ago still being visible, if it had been tested then this would not have been so apparent. On the retest we found that thes ecable passed and should not of been coded in this way.
We iassued a new Minor Works Certifcate confirming this and the client has a satisfactory outocome.
EICR’s are advertised for low cost and a fast turnaround - usually that fit’s with the clients…below are a few other things that might be helpful have a read and let us know your thoughts.
Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) are a legal requirement for landlords and an essential electrical safety check for homeowners and businesses. However, increased demand has led to a rise in rogue or poor-quality EICRs, often carried out cheaply and incorrectly.
At NOD Electrical Services, based in Streatham, we regularly deal with the fallout from rushed or misleading EICRs — and they often result in unnecessary cost, delays, and frustration for property owners.
What Is a Rogue EICR?
A rogue EICR is an Electrical Installation Condition Report that has not been completed properly. This may include reports that are:
Carried out by electricians who are not competent in inspection and testing
Completed too quickly, with little or no proper testing
Incorrectly coded or poorly explained
Based on visual checks only
Used to justify unnecessary remedial work
A compliant EICR must meet BS 7671 Wiring Regulations and include both inspection and testing.
Why Rogue EICRs Are a Problem
A correctly carried out EICR identifies genuine electrical safety risks. Poor-quality EICRs can either miss dangerous faults — such as inadequate earthing or damaged wiring — or incorrectly mark safe installations as unsafe.
Both situations create problems, either by putting people at risk or by causing unnecessary expense and disruption.
Cheap EICRs Often Cost More Overall
Choosing the cheapest EICR quote can be a false economy. Once a property is coded as unsatisfactory, those issues must be resolved before the report can be made compliant. For landlords, this is a legal requirement — even if the original codes were incorrect.
Correcting a poor EICR often involves:
Second-opinion inspections
Additional site visits
Unnecessary remedial work
Delays to compliance or tenancies
We’re frequently contacted by landlords and homeowners across Streatham and South London after a low-cost EICR has caused problems. In many cases, the customer ends up paying twice. A properly priced EICR reflects the time, testing, and experience required to do the job right first time.
What a Proper EICR Should Include
A professional Electrical Installation Condition Report should:
Take a realistic amount of time for the property
Include full electrical testing
Clearly explain any observations and codes
Focus on genuine electrical safety, not scare tactics
