What the work involves

Practical guidance before choosing equipment.

We assess the existing electrical system and proposed equipment before recommending a configuration. The information below outlines what is relevant to each service.

01 / Home battery installation

Storage suited to your household.

Battery capacity is only one part of the design. We consider your daily import, when electricity is used, available installation space, equipment compatibility and the proposed location before sizing the system.

We can discuss standalone grid-charged arrangements as well as storage associated with solar. A battery does not require solar panels to be useful, but its operating features must match your objectives.

  • Review electricity usage and half-hourly data where available
  • Assess intended capacity, inverter output and usable energy
  • Check location, clearances, accessibility and maintenance arrangements
  • Consider equipment support, monitoring and manufacturer warranties
  • Explain what is included in the proposed electrical installation
02 / Solar PV integration

Use compatible surplus solar energy later.

Where compatible, storage can charge from existing solar panels rather than exporting surplus electricity. It can then discharge to support household consumption when generation drops.

Not all existing inverters or PV systems can accept batteries directly. The appropriate AC-coupled or hybrid arrangement depends on installed equipment, electrical design, metering and permissions.

  • Record the current PV inverter and generation capacity
  • Check monitoring, current transformers and power-flow settings
  • Assess compatibility with the proposed battery and inverter
  • Review the combined network-connection arrangements
  • Agree how the system will charge, export and prioritise loads

Solar panel installation is a separate scope of work; this page concerns electrical battery-storage assessment and integration.

03 / Tesla Powerwall & other equipment

Choose equipment around the installation.

We can assess whether a Tesla Powerwall or another manufacturer’s battery-storage equipment is appropriate for the property, subject to product requirements, installer eligibility, supply arrangements and available equipment.

The exact specification, usable capacity, charge/discharge rating, inverter topology and backup features vary by model. We will distinguish between a proposed system and any equipment we can supply or install.

  • Location, mounting and manufacturer-specified clearances
  • Single-phase or three-phase supply requirements
  • Earthing arrangements, bonding, isolation and protection
  • Gateway, backup and monitoring compatibility where relevant
  • Commissioning and warranty conditions for the selected manufacturer

Mentioning a manufacturer does not represent an exclusive range or claim manufacturer accreditation.

04 / Off-peak grid charging

Charge at cheaper times, use later.

Some battery systems can charge from the grid during a lower-rate tariff period and support the home later when import prices are higher. This can be useful even without solar panels.

The economics depend on the tariff, daily consumption, available charging hours, conversion losses, usable battery capacity and equipment cost. Savings are not guaranteed.

  • Confirm the tariff and actual overnight charging window
  • Check the maximum sustained battery charging rate (kW)
  • Compare usable storage capacity (kWh) with the daily load profile
  • Configure supported charge/discharge schedules and reserve levels
  • Review whether battery charging could add to peak incoming demand
05 / Backup power options

A battery does not automatically mean blackout protection.

Standard grid-connected battery installations may shut down during a mains failure. Supplying circuits during an outage requires suitable equipment and a purpose-designed backup arrangement with appropriate protection and isolation.

We discuss whether you want essential circuits, selected loads or another manufacturer-supported arrangement. Practical backup duration depends on battery state of charge and the connected loads.

  • Identify loads that must operate during a power cut
  • Check backup switching, gateway and islanding capabilities
  • Design appropriate separation from the distribution network
  • Consider earthing and protective measures during backup operation
  • Explain operational limitations and test procedures
06 / Electrical upgrades & compliance

Electrical suitability comes before installation.

Battery storage requires more than an available way in a consumer unit. We assess electrical safety, protective devices, cable routes, safe isolation, equipment compatibility and the requirements for connecting inverter-based storage to the network.

Domestic battery placement and fire safety must also be assessed, including relevant guidance under BS 7671 and PAS 63100:2024, where applicable.

  • Incoming supply, maximum demand and existing generating equipment
  • Consumer unit, circuit arrangement, earthing and protective measures
  • Suitable battery position, escape routes and fire-safety considerations
  • G98/G99 DNO notification or approval as applicable to the design
  • Installation, testing, commissioning and appropriate documentation

Additional remedial electrical works, permissions and third-party connection approvals are identified before commitment wherever possible.

Battery location and fire safety: A proposed battery location is not approved simply because space is available. Suitability depends on the equipment, property, escape routes and applicable requirements, including the manufacturer’s instructions and PAS 63100:2024 where relevant.
Capacity versus power

kWh and kW are different.

Two figures matter when selecting battery storage. They describe how much energy can be stored and how quickly it can be charged or supplied.

Battery capacity — kWh

The amount of energy a battery can store. A nominal 10 kWh battery may have less usable capacity after the manufacturer’s operating limits are considered.

Inverter output — kW

The power the system can deliver at a given moment. A 3.6 kW inverter does not mean the battery holds 3.6 kWh. Charge and discharge limits may differ, and some household loads may exceed inverter output.

For tariff-based charging: We consider whether the charging rate and available cheap-rate hours can replenish the battery before the higher-rate period begins, allowing for losses and operating limits.

Frequently asked questions

Home battery storage questions.

Can I install home battery storage without solar panels?

Yes. Some systems support scheduled charging from the grid and discharge later in the day. We check the equipment and tariff setup before confirming the design.

Will a battery keep the house running during a power cut?

Only where the battery and associated equipment support a compliant backup arrangement. Standard grid-connected operation alone does not guarantee backup power.

What size home battery do I need?

It depends on your consumption profile, charging window, existing solar output where applicable, desired reserve and the system’s charge/discharge power limits. A survey and usage data help us assess suitable capacity.

Do I need DNO approval to add a battery?

The installer must determine the correct DNO connection route. Depending on the system and existing generation, this can involve a G98 notification after installation or prior G99 approval, including any relevant export-limitation arrangements.

Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?

Often, subject to compatibility and the network-connection arrangement. We review the existing inverter, generation capacity, metering and the proposed storage equipment before confirming an approach.

Are all battery systems suitable for indoor installation?

No. Location suitability is design-specific and must address manufacturer instructions, fire safety, escape routes and applicable domestic energy-storage requirements.

Which parts of South London do you cover?
