Commercial pricing varies considerably where networked chargers, payment systems, pedestals, groundworks or a new three-phase supply are required. A site survey allows the electrical infrastructure and future expansion to be considered before equipment is selected.

What Is a Standard EV Charger Installation?

A straightforward home installation will normally have:

  • Private off-street parking next to the property.

  • A suitable external wall on which to mount the charger.

  • A short, accessible cable route from the consumer unit or meter position.

  • Adequate supply capacity for a 7 kW charger.

  • A consumer unit that can safely accommodate the new circuit, or space for suitable separate protective equipment.

  • No trenching, scaffolding or major building work.

  • Reliable Wi-Fi, Ethernet or mobile connectivity where required by the charger.

  • No requirement for the electricity distributor to alter the incoming service.

Every property is different. A low headline price may only cover a short cable route and may exclude items such as additional protective equipment, surge protection, load management, groundworks, certification, DNO administration or VAT. What Is Included in an EV Charger Installation?

The exact scope will be confirmed in your quotation, but a complete installation will normally include:

  • Assessment of the incoming supply, maximum demand, earthing and bonding.

  • Advice on the most suitable charger for the vehicle, property and energy tariff.

  • Installation of a dedicated EV charging circuit.

  • Correct circuit protection, RCD protection and open-PEN protection where required.

  • Surge protection assessment and installation where required.

  • Dynamic load management where needed to prevent the property exceeding its available supply capacity.

  • Mounting and connection of the chargepoint.

  • Electrical inspection, testing and commissioning.

  • Connection to the charger app and basic customer handover.

What Can Increase the Cost?

1. Charger make and model

The chargepoint itself is a significant part of the total cost. Compact smart chargers are generally less expensive than premium units with concealed cables, custom finishes or advanced solar integration.

2. Cable length and route

A charger mounted close to the consumer unit is usually less expensive than an installation requiring a long armoured cable route through a house, loft, garden or communal area. Difficult access, specialist fixings and fire-stopping can also affect the price.

3. Consumer unit and protective equipment

An older consumer unit may not have the capacity or appropriate protection for a new EV circuit. Depending on the installation, a separate enclosure may be suitable, while other properties may require remedial work or a consumer unit upgrade. This is assessed before the final quotation is issued.

4. Available electrical capacity

A 7 kW charger can draw approximately 32 A continuously. We assess the existing loads, service fuse and supply capacity before installation. Dynamic load management can automatically reduce the charging rate when the property is using more electricity, often avoiding an unnecessary supply upgrade.

Where prior approval or an alteration to the incoming service is required, the timescale and any DNO charges are outside the installer's control and will be explained separately.

5. Groundworks and parking position

Trenching, lifting paving, installing ducts, crossing gardens or fitting a freestanding pedestal will increase the cost. Reinstatement requirements should be agreed in advance, particularly for shared driveways, managed developments and commercial car parks.

6. Three-phase and 22 kW charging

Most UK homes use a single-phase supply and charge at up to 7.4 kW. A 22 kW charger requires a suitable three-phase supply, and the vehicle must also be capable of accepting 22 kW AC charging. Three-phase commercial projects require a load assessment and normally need a site-specific design.

7. Solar panels and battery storage

A solar-compatible charger such as Zappi can use surplus generation that would otherwise be exported. Additional metering, CT clamps, communications equipment or configuration may be required where solar panels or battery storage are already installed.

Current OZEV EV Charger Grants

Government grants can reduce the installation cost for eligible customers. From 1 April 2026, the maximum contribution increased to £500 per eligible socket. The current schemes are funded until 31 March 2027, subject to eligibility and government terms.

Current support includes:

  • Renters and flat owners: up to £500 towards one chargepoint socket, with qualifying private off-street parking.

  • Households with on-street parking: up to £500 where an approved cross-pavement charging solution, such as a cable gully, is being installed.

  • Residential landlords: up to £500 per socket, subject to scheme limits and eligibility.

  • Workplace Charging Scheme: up to 75% of the eligible purchase and installation cost, capped at £500 per socket and up to 40 sockets across all sites.

  • State-funded education institutions: up to £2,000 per socket, for up to 40 sockets.

Grant approval must be obtained before installation where required by the relevant scheme. Is the Cheapest EV Charger Quote the Best Value?

Not necessarily. Two quotations may appear to cover the same charger while including very different levels of electrical work. Before accepting a quotation, check whether it includes:

  • VAT.

  • The chargepoint and its warranty.

  • All cabling, containment and fixings.

  • Dedicated circuit protection and any required surge protection.

  • Open-PEN protection where applicable.

  • Load management equipment.

  • Testing and an Electrical Installation Certificate.

  • Building Regulations notification.

  • DNO notification or application.

  • App setup and commissioning.

  • Groundworks and reinstatement.

  • Aftercare if the charger fails to connect or commission correctly.

A compliant installation should be designed around the electrical supply and how the vehicle will be used, rather than simply fitting the lowest-cost charger available.

Is a 22 kW charger better than a 7 kW charger?

Only where the property has a suitable three-phase supply and the vehicle can accept 22 kW AC charging. For most homes, a 7 kW charger is the practical option and is normally sufficient for overnight charging.

Can an EV charger work with solar panels?

Yes. A compatible smart charger can use available surplus solar generation. The correct charger, monitoring equipment and CT arrangement will depend on the solar inverter, battery system and electrical layout.

Can you install a charger that I have already purchased?

Usually, subject to checking the model, condition, compatibility, warranty requirements and compliance with UK smart-charging regulations. An installation-only quotation can be provided after the proposed equipment and site have been assessed.

Do I need permission to install an EV charger?

Homeowners with private parking can often proceed without a separate planning application, but restrictions may apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, leasehold properties, flats, shared parking and equipment close to the highway. Tenants and leaseholders should obtain the property owner's or freeholder's written consent before work is booked.

Will my electricity supply need upgrading?
