NOD Electrical Services is a Streatham-based, NAPIT Approved electrical contractor. We install EV chargers from all major manufacturers for homes, landlords and businesses throughout South London. Choosing the right equipment starts with the property's supply and the way the vehicle will be charged—not with a particular charger brand.

What should be checked before fitting a charger?

1. Electrical supply

Review the service capacity, maximum demand, existing loads and whether dynamic load management is appropriate. Check DNO notification or approval requirements.

2. Earthing and protection

Assess the earthing arrangement, open-PEN protection where applicable, RCD requirements, suitable circuit protection and any SPD requirements.

3. Cable route and parking

Consider cable length, external routing, mechanical protection, charger position, Wi-Fi/data connectivity and any groundworks or permissions.

Installation design is subject to BS 7671 Section 722 and applicable general requirements, manufacturer instructions and the electricity distributor's requirements. Open-PEN arrangements depend on the supply and installation design; not every charger uses the same solution.

Home EV charging

Many single-phase homes use a smart charger rated at approximately 7.4 kW (32 A at 230 V), where the supply and installation can support it. A lower current limit or load management may be appropriate for some properties.

Off-peak tariffs, scheduled charging, solar compatibility and app controls can be useful, but the ideal feature set depends on your vehicle, electricity tariff and parking arrangements.

How our EV charger installation service works

What affects the installation estimate?

  • Charger model and whether it is tethered or untethered
  • Distance from the supply to the charging point
  • Consumer unit provision and protective devices
  • Earthing / PEN-fault protection solution
  • Containment, drilling, trenching or pedestal
  • Network connectivity and commissioning

We provide a written estimate after reviewing the installation requirements. Avoid treating old online guide prices as fixed quotations.

EV charger installation costs

We install chargers from all major brands

Examples of chargers customers ask us about include Tesla, Zappi, Ohme, Andersen, Sync EV and Simpson & Partners. These are examples, not a restricted list of brands we install. We can discuss alternatives to suit your requirements.

Workplace and communal charging

Commercial installations may require more than an individual charger: supply assessment, load balancing, user access control, billing/reporting, cable infrastructure and capacity for future chargepoints. Flats and shared parking also involve access and ownership permissions.

We work on domestic and commercial electrical installations and can discuss a site survey for your premises. Explore our commercial electrical services or request an EV charging estimate.

EV charging grants and permissions

Grant availability and eligibility change. Certain households, landlords, tenants, flat owners and businesses may qualify for schemes, subject to current conditions. Eligibility must be checked before relying on funding in an estimate. On-street parking may also require local authority consent and an approved cross-pavement arrangement.

For current criteria, use the official government EV grant guidance. NOD can discuss installation documentation and any applicable grant process.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a 7 kW charger with a 60 A supply?

Possibly, but it cannot be determined from the supply-fuse rating alone. The installer must assess maximum demand, existing loads and any appropriate load-management arrangement, with the DNO involved where required.

Does an EV charger need an earth rod?

Not automatically. The appropriate protective measure depends on the earthing arrangement, charger and open-PEN protection solution. Section 722 of BS 7671 sets relevant requirements.

Can a charger run on a cheap overnight tariff?

Many smart chargers support scheduling or integration with tariff/vehicle controls. Confirm compatibility with the selected charger, vehicle and energy supplier.

Do I need a new consumer unit?

Not necessarily. The existing equipment, circuit capacity and protection must be assessed. A suitable dedicated supply arrangement may be possible without replacing the whole consumer unit.

Can you install a brand not shown here?

Yes. NOD installs chargers from all major manufacturers. The featured manufacturers are simply examples.

Can I charge a car parked on the street?

Some properties may be able to use a council-approved cross-pavement charging solution. Permissions and suitability must be established before installation.
